This past weekend was the Weatherly Hillclimb and Hyde took 1st place in SM2. Unfortunately I did not surpass the previous SM2 record for this hill set by Hyde in the fall.
The record from the fall was 60.0 and I got down to a 60.2 on my last run. I was running extremely conservative all weekend as the road was extremely slippery and my intent is always to drive the car home.
I was also held back a bit by the slipping clutch. It only slips when "insanity power" gets put down so going WOT was proving fruitless on some of the steep parts. I actually ran the 60-second pass using 3/4-throttle. I may fabricate a throttle stop until the twin disc clutch gets installed.
60 seconds over a 1 mile course ... that's a 60 mph average speed :D Not too shaby when you consider turn 3, the wall, is posted for 5 mph.
I am waiting for the results to see how Hyde finished over all in raw times.
Anyway, here's the fun stuff:
Cin shot this with her little point-n-shoot camera that takes short videos with NO SOUND. I was launching soft because of the clutch and I missed 2nd gear .... but watch how Hyde takes off after the first telephone pole! Video #1 http://www.jekylhyderacing.com/images/cin_cellphone_cam_Hyde_Weatherly_hillclimb_spring_2006.wmv
This is filmed with the Chase Cam mounted in the front bumper where the p-side fog light would be. This was from Saturday when the course was very slippery. This is a 6 meg file, but it is "internet resolution." For me to share this high quality it would have been close to 30 megs! I love this Chase Cam set up ... it's truly awesome. Video #2http://www.jekylhyderacing.com/images/Hyde_Weatherly_hillclimb_Chase_Cam.wmv
This is my last and fastest run of the weekend (60.2). I was much more aggressive as the sun was out and the road was coming alive and there was a lot more grip. With grip comes confidence so I went for it on the last run. Video #3 http://www.jekylhyderacing.com/images/Hyde_Weatherly_hillclimb_Rollbar_Cam.wmv
Incidently, I was intentionally trying to not get "big air" on the jump this year as I destroyed 3 rear swaybar endlinks during my last 3 visits to Weatherly :( |

I think you are creazy !!!
The movie looks like a vary dangerous velocity, it's true? When you are in the middle of the race you travel around 180 miles/h, right?
Anyways, you got all my respect, you are a real driver if you can control a Rear engine's car whit so many hourse power in a hill climb!

Hello Angelo, thanks for the kind words. On that particular hill we only hit pretty high rpms in 3rd gear (less than 100 mph) on the first straight.
In 10 days we will be doing the Pagoda Hillclimb and we will be getting up into 4th gear on that hill. That will be well into the triple digits. |

Wow......... i'm simply astonished!!!
wonderful car, wonderfully driven!!! but above all, gorgeous roads.... where that race took place?? I'm very curious. I lived 6 months in Arizona, but travelled a lot in the south west of USA, I remember very beautiful roads even if with different nature!!!!
Let us know about your future races. bye bye

Alessandro, the hillclimbs I race in are in Pennsylvania. I've never been to Arizona.

Hi Jeff, my first thought every time I see a hillclimb video is you are crazy!
My second is SCCA is great! In Italy would be no possible to do a race between a wood, with trees all along the road...
Well, congratulations! Later I'll send you my feelings about Hyde performance. |

Hey Templare, thanks for the response.
You mentioned the slowness of engine response coming out of the turns. Some of the turns on these hills are incredibly steep (greater than 22°).
This is turn #3 called "the Wall." http://www.jekylhyderacing.com/images/tu_sweatherly_05_2.jpg
That is a huge elevation chagne while doing a compelte 180° turn. It absolutely destroys momentum.
I think you might get more perspective from comparing another turbo MR2 on the same course. This video is another 91 turbo MR2 from this past weekend. That car has a TD06 turbo on it which should be quicker spooling than mine: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2163535236327986423&q=efabio

Ja Jeff, that turn seems very difficult, I can imagine it. But what's your mind about differences between GT30 and GT35? I don't drive Hyde, just can hear its sound, so you are the only one can know how really is the matter.
A question: do you know Hyde alignment (toe, camber) data?

I've never used a GT30 so I am not sure.
Hyde's alignment is: Front: Camber -1.3° Caster 4° Toe .2 in
Front: Camber -1.6° Toe .4 in
This is Hyde going over the jump at Weatherly last weekend:

Thank you for alignment data, Jeff.
Sorry, not GT30. It was hybrid T3/T4 or so, I really forgot your past setup My new question: GT35 with 2.2 displacement vs old turbo and 2.0 displacement. What are your impressions about low rpm response? |

We have not finished tuning yet as we need to get a clutch in that can hold the power. Once we can start tuning, we are going to adjust the cams to get more power in the low rpms.
Regardless of that, the car is much quicker in the bottom already. I actually have a 2.139, not a 2.2 :)
Here is a video of a twin-turbo, all-wheel-drive Audi ITE race car doing the same hilclimb event. He was 1-second faster than me on his clean run. On this run, he forgot his hood pins and the hood comes crashing up :( http://home.comcast.net/~audibmw/weatherly.htm |

I understand. By the way is great you feel more power in the bottom also without full tuning and cam setting. Do you know your new compression ratio?
Really did Audi driver forget hood pins? Well, he was lucky the hood has open in the slow...
Other videos Jeff? |

Hyde's pistons are 9:1 compression.
Hyde's only other videos so far this year are from autocrosses. These are really tight courses set up in parking lots. These courses are so tight and have so many turns that I almost never make boost. I go to these to test my suspension and brakes to make sure I am safe on the hillclimbs.
Here are a few: Course #1 In the rain, bumper view: http://www.jekylhyderacing.com/images/hyde_autocross_NEPA_SCCA_6_4_06.wmv Course #2 from the roof: http://www.jekylhyderacing.com/images/Hyde_Autocross_NEPA_5_28_06_B.wmv Course #2 from the door: http://www.jekylhyderacing.com/images/Hyde_Autocross_SCCA_043006.wmv Course #3 from the interior: http://www.jekylhyderacing.com/images/Hyde_Autocross_SCCA_043006.wmv
9:1 is cool! Definitely Hyde will get a lot of horsepowers in low range with a full fine tuning.
Thank you for new videos. Who's that one on passenger side?
Thank you for alignement numbers again. This morning, before to set it right, my mechanic tested TiJey on a hillclimb road in my town and said me: "I have seen death with my eyes, I was going to crash your car against a wall"... Then he setted alignement and tested car again on the same road, but this time his phone call was more relaxed: "All right Dario, you can drive this saturday". I'm very curious to test right alignment and new Rotora brakes on track.

I actually have no idea who was in the passenger seat. At the autocrosses I have people always asking to passenger and I let them. I frequently turn a slightly better time with a passenger!
As for the alignment, for the last 4 years I just ran factory specs for alignment. My tuner suggested the number that I am now using and I am very happy so far. |
